Quick answers for committees considering a fundraiser cruise.

Can people who are not traveling still support the cruise?

Yes. Offer a way to donate, sponsor an event on board or buy auction items without sailing. It widens your base of support.

Do we need a host or escort on board?

Not necessarily, but someone should be the group’s point person on board. Some organizations invite a professional host; see our sister site Cruise With a Host.

How far ahead should we start?

Twelve to eighteen months gives time for approval, promotion and the group’s release and payment dates. See our planning timeline.

Can we choose any cruise line?

Most major lines accept group bookings, but group terms and benefits differ. Your advisor can compare them for your sailing.

Do we need a minimum number of people?

Not to sail together, but group terms at many lines begin at about eight cabins or sixteen guests. Ask your advisor what applies on the sailings you are considering.

What are tour conductor credits?

A benefit many lines give qualifying groups, often expressed as a complimentary berth after a set number of paying guests. Terms vary by line, and some benefits are tied to the group leader.

Can supporters who are not members join?

Usually yes, and it helps. Friends and family of members often make up a big share of a fundraiser cruise.

Who is responsible if not enough people book?

Group blocks normally have a release date by which unsold cabins return to the line. Read the group terms carefully, especially any deposit the organization itself pays.

Can we hold a silent auction on board?

Possibly, in a private space booked for your group, subject to the ship’s rules. Ask before planning it.

Is the donation part tax-deductible?

We do not give tax advice. Rules on payments that include travel are specific; speak to a tax professional and see the IRS charities pages.

Can the organizer travel free?

Sometimes group benefits can offset an organizer’s fare, but disclose this to supporters openly and follow your organization’s policies.

What does an advisor cost?

Nothing to your organization for standard bookings. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise are paid by the cruise lines.

Next Steps

Before Your First Committee Meeting

Bring three things: a rough count of supporters who might travel, a short list of months that suit your organization’s calendar, and a sense of the cause the cruise will support. With those, our cruise advisors can suggest sailings and explain the group terms in a single conversation.

Ask a Fundraiser Cruise Question
